Media release: Morley – Ellenbrook line one step closer

  • Railway (METRONET) Amendment Bill 2019 passed by both Houses of State Parliament
  • Travel time from Ellenbrook to Perth on public transport will be almost halved
  • Thousands of local jobs will be created over the life of the project
  • Recent survey shows community excited about Morley-Ellenbrook line

Jessica Shaw MLA, Member for Swan Hills, has welcomed the passage of the Morley – Ellenbrook METRONET Rail Line Act through the WA Parliament overnight.

The passing of the Bill means the project is another major step closer and the route is now enshrined in legislation.

A major election commitment, the 21km line will spur off the Midland Line at Bayswater, run down the middle of Tonkin Highway, through land north of Marshall Road, along the new Lord Street alignment and finish in the growing Ellenbrook town centre.

For passengers travelling direct from Ellenbrook to the CBD, the trip on the Morley – Ellenbrook Line will take about 30 minutes – half the current travel time for local residents using public transport.

Stations will be built at, Ellenbrook, Whiteman Park, Malaga, Noranda and Morley with allowance for a future station at Bennett Springs East also in the design.

Swan Hills MLA Jessica Shaw has welcomed the widespread community support for the project.

A recent survey of 687 local community residents has shown an incredible 84 per cent of respondents feel positive about the Morley – Ellenbrook line coming to their suburb, while 80 per cent feel it will positively impact their suburb.

Thousands of local jobs will be created over the life of the project, with early works already underway as part of the major redevelopment of Bayswater Station.

Comments attributed to Jessica Shaw:
“I am so pleased the Morley to Ellenbrook line is continuing to take shape.

“I have spoken to residents in Swan Hills and for many of them, this has been a long time coming. I am proud to be a member of the McGowan Government delivering on this commitment to Ellenbrook.

“This project will create thousands of local jobs over its lifetime and when complete ease congestion and reduce the number of cars on our local roads.”
